The EUreflect delegation, comprising Muhammad Anas and Dr. İsmail Polat, recently attended the prestigious International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) 2025, held in Istanbul under the auspices of the Turkish Ministry of National Defence. Recognized as one of the largest and most influential defense expos in the world, IDEF 2025 brought together defense ministries, private companies, and strategic thinkers from across the globe.

This year’s exhibition was a powerful demonstration of Türkiye’s rise as a global defense manufacturing hub. From indigenous small arms to sophisticated missile defense systems, the range and quality of Turkish-made equipment were impressive. Türkiye’s hypersonic missile project, displayed for the first time, attracted strong interest and underscored the country’s ambitious push toward next-generation military technology.

Turkish drone programs also remained a major highlight, with visitors crowding around to witness the latest in unmanned aerial systems. Companies like Baykar, Aselsan, Roketsan, and TUSAŞ showcased technologies that spanned land, air, naval, and cyber domains. The emphasis on smart systems, artificial intelligence, and network-centric warfare clearly signaled the direction modern militaries are heading.

Engagement with Strategic Partners

As part of its diplomatic and policy engagement, the EUreflect delegation paid special visits to the national stalls of Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Sudan, Ukrain and many more engaging in discussions with defense officials and industry representatives.

At the Pakistani pavilion, the delegation explored the model of the JF-17 Thunder, a joint project between Pakistan and China that continues to earn global recognition. Pakistani officials spoke with pride about the aircraft’s operational performance, particularly in defending the country’s sovereignty during times of heightened tension with India. The conversation also touched upon Pakistan’s collaboration with Türkiye on the KAAN fifth-generation fighter project, a milestone in Muslim-world defense cooperation.

The Azerbaijani delegation expressed interest in enhancing military cooperation, especially in tactical systems and surveillance technologies. Azerbaijan’s emphasis on defense modernization, following recent regional developments, aligns with Türkiye’s growing leadership role in regional stability.

Sudan’s participation reflected its intent to rebuild and restructure its defense sector. Despite facing internal challenges, Sudan’s representatives showed a clear commitment to regional peacekeeping and bilateral cooperation with both African and Middle Eastern partners.

The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defense showcased massive display at the expo. As part of its Vision 2030 initiative, Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in building its domestic defense production capabilities. Its stall featured state-of-the-art land and air systems, highlighting the Kingdom’s ambition to transition from a top arms importer to a technology producer and exporter.

Global Presence and Strategic Shifts

IDEF 2025 also featured a strong presence from Chinese defense companies, known for their expertise in electronic engineering, radar systems, and software-based solutions. Their cutting-edge technology, particularly in the fields of electronic warfare and command & control systems, was a central attraction for many delegations.

Of notable importance was the engagement with representatives of the Eurofighter Typhoon consortium, as Türkiye is poised to incorporate the Eurofighter into its air fleet. This move represents a significant development in Türkiye’s evolving defense relations with Europe and showcases the country’s dual-track strategy of collaborating with both Western and non-Western powers.

Across the exhibition halls, numerous strategic agreements and MoUs were signed, many involving technology transfer, joint production, and training programs. The collaborative spirit at IDEF 2025 reaffirmed that modern defense is no longer about arms alone—it’s about diplomacy, innovation, and multilateral trust-building.

The rise of regional defense self-reliance, especially in Türkiye, Pakistan, Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia.

The growing role of smart software, AI, and cyber-integrated systems in modern military planning.

A shift toward multipolar partnerships, where countries are no longer dependent on a single bloc but explore diverse defense alliances.

IDEF 2025 proved to be not only a showcase of weaponry but a forum of ideas, partnerships, and the future of global security architecture.
