EUReflect Attends the Commemoration of the 69th Anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution at the Embassy of Hungary in Brussels

EUReflect had the honor of attending a reception hosted by the Embassy of Hungary in Brussels to commemorate the 69th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight — a defining moment in Hungary’s modern history and a powerful symbol of the nation’s enduring pursuit of freedom and sovereignty.

The event, held under the patronage of Ambassador Tamás Iván Kovács, brought together a distinguished group of guests from the diplomatic, political, cultural, and administrative spheres. Among the notable attendees were:

The reception was further distinguished by the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Belgium, Jan Jambon, whose participation underscored the significance of this historical commemoration. Birgit Stevens, representing the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, delivered a thoughtful address highlighting Hungary’s contribution to the shared European values of liberty, dignity, and unity.

The Hungarian Revolution of 1956, which began on October 23, was a spontaneous nationwide uprising against Soviet domination and the communist regime. Initiated by student demonstrations in Budapest, the movement rapidly evolved into a mass call for democracy, national independence, and human rights. Although the revolution was violently suppressed by Soviet forces, it remains one of the most poignant expressions of resistance and courage in post-war European history.

The reception welcomed hundreds of guests from Belgium, Luxembourg, and the broader Brussels diplomatic and European communities, including representatives from the European Parliament and EU institutions. The event was supported by the Permanent Representation of Hungary to the European Union, the Hungarian Mission to NATO, and the Liszt Institute – Hungarian Cultural Center Brussels.
