Tbilisi is built on the same principle as Kutaisi (which I talked about in a previous article), with two banks divided by the Kura River and surrounded by hills and cliffs. Both sides of the river are connected by bridges like the Bridge of Peace and cable cars.

There is no city center as you could expect from many European Cities. What may look like it the most is Liberty Square not so far from parliament. In fact, the city is divided into multiple districts with one being the most convivial, colored and peaceful, the Old City. While the place expands over several different districts, it keeps this informal name for both locals and travelers. You could lose yourself in the small streets all day long, but you will always end up finding your way out. I recommend you to book a room in one of the many Guest Houses or hotels along the neighborhood.

There are several religious places you cannot miss like the Cathedral of Sioni, the Great Synagogue, the Anchiskhati Basilica and the Gabriadze Clock Tower next to it. Under the warmth of the sun, there are street vendors offering refreshing wine and pomegranate Ice Cream for 5 GEL. You would have surely noticed the statue of Kartlis Deda on top of the Hill guarding the city. If you climb up there, you will have access to a magnificent view of the city but that’s not all. If you go to the Narikala Fortress you will notice the only Mosque of Tbilisi. Passing next to it, you will discover a hidden waterfall right behind the hill.

Food is great and diverse, with accommodation for everyone either for religious belief, personal convictions or picky eaters.

At the end of the day, you will consider it was enough of a day to explore this old city, but you will surely want to come again.
