The U.S. Department of Defense has given the White House a green light to transfer long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, according to multiple American and European officials cited by CNN. The move follows months of internal debate in Washington about how far U.S. military support for Kyiv should extend without provoking direct confrontation with Moscow.

Pentagon analysts reportedly concluded that supplying Tomahawks would not critically reduce the United States’ own stockpiles. However, the final political decision remains in the hands of President Donald Trump, who has not yet signed off on the transfer.

A Step Toward Escalation

If approved, the delivery would mark one of the most powerful weapons systems ever supplied to Ukraine. The Tomahawk, with a range exceeding 1,500 kilometers, is capable of striking deep inside enemy territory with high precision.

According to Reuters, European officials privately welcomed the Pentagon’s conclusion, interpreting it as a shift that weakens arguments against providing advanced long-range systems to Kyiv.

However, President Trump remains cautious. During a recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, he emphasized that the United States “should not give away what it still needs to defend itself,” according to a CNN report. Earlier this month, Trump also told NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that Washington would not share “unique American knowledge” of Tomahawk deployment methods.

Operational Challenges

Even if the transfer goes ahead, military experts warn that Ukraine would face technical and logistical hurdles. The Tomahawk missile is traditionally launched from U.S. warships and submarines, but Ukraine’s naval capabilities have been largely destroyed since the start of the war.

According to analysts quoted by The Guardian, the only viable alternative would be adapting land-based systems or developing improvised launch platforms — something Ukrainian engineers successfully did earlier with British-made Storm Shadow missiles.

President Vladimir Putin warned on October 23 that any potential use of Tomahawk missiles against Russian territory would trigger a “serious, if not shocking” response. His spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, later said the president’s words were “self-explanatory and final.”

Following a phone call between Trump and Putin earlier in October, the U.S. leader reportedly paused the missile decision, with American media suggesting that Washington is keeping the option open as a form of political leverage.

While the Pentagon’s assessment clears a major technical hurdle, the question now lies in the political sphere. The Wall Street Journal and CNN both report that the Trump administration has already prepared a plan for rapid delivery if the president authorizes it.
