She shares her reflections on Türkiye, comparing it with European cities and offering cultural observations shaped by her personal journey. Here, we present her impressions of Türkiye’s streets, spirit, and people—through the lens of a well-traveled professional.

Botakoz Unbayeva: What kinds of tourist similarities do you observe between cities in Türkiye and Europe?

Aykerim Absamatova: I have noticed that both Turkish and European cities are deeply imbued with history. Ancient and medieval temples, fortresses, cathedrals, and mosques can be found everywhere. Iconic landmarks such as Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and Galata Tower captivate visitors not only with their architectural magnificence but also with their historical depth. Tourist routes are rich and vibrant, often crowded—especially during peak season. The nightlife is also vivid: lights, music, café terraces, smiles, and conversations.

However, one striking difference stands out for me: the approach toward tourists in Türkiye is markedly warmer. People are noticeably more kind-hearted, open to interaction, and willing to assist. In Europe, the atmosphere seems slightly more formal and reserved. In Türkiye, one does not feel like a mere traveler in a foreign country, but rather as a guest welcomed into someone’s home.

Botakoz Unbayeva: Based on your observations, does Türkiye appear to be more influenced by Western or Eastern culture?

Aykerim Absamatova: Türkiye is, in the most literal sense, a bridge between East and West. This is evident in its architecture, cuisine, communication styles, and even the clothing of passersby. Walking through the streets of Istanbul, Bodrum, Marmaris, and Kaş, I encountered a diverse range of people—each unique and expressive in their self-presentation. Some were covered in tattoos, others wore bright, colorful clothing, and some dressed in traditional garments—all coexisting harmoniously.
While there is an evident openness that reflects European influence, one can also sense a distinct Eastern warmth in the collective mentality. I genuinely felt as though I had arrived at the home of distant relatives—such was the familial warmth, comfort, and emotional closeness. Eastern hospitality operates on a completely different level; here, people do not merely smile out of politeness, but genuinely express joy at your presence.

Botakoz Unbayeva: What was your experience regarding local attitudes toward foreigners in Türkiye?

Aykerim Absamatova: In my view, the people of Türkiye are a reason in themselves to fall in love with the country. Everyone I encountered was polite, welcoming, and not only responded to my questions but earnestly tried to help. When I asked for directions or how to reach the metro, people didn’t just explain—they often accompanied me to the right turn or station. Turks are sociable and open, and remarkably, despite the fast-paced rhythm of large cities, they retain an inner calm.

There is an unhurried joy in their eyes. They know how to enjoy life—with a cup of tea, a warm smile, or a simple conversation, even amid the noise and rush. This inner calm is contagious. Observing the people of Türkiye, you naturally begin to slow down, soften, and feel emotionally warmed. It is as though they live in a stable, luminous equilibrium.
