The internal reorganization unveiled by Georges-Louis Bouchez (GLB) this Monday marks a new step in his full takeover of the MR, six years after becoming party president. This move follows a familiar logic: centralizing power, tightening control over communication, and surrounding himself with an ever-smaller circle of loyal supporters.

Georges-Louis Bouchez has presented a new internal organizational chart for the MR. Officially, it is a reorganization. Unofficially, it is a tactical manoeuvre on the liberal chessboard, where the president advances his pieces without truly altering the party’s dynamics.

An Internal Shuffle That Looks Like a Game of Chess

A few pawns move forward, a knight turns into a bishop, other pieces quietly slide from one square to another… But on the Reformist Movement’s chessboard, the manoeuvre is anything but new.

The internal reshuffling unveiled on Monday morning resembles more a strategic adjustment meant to strengthen Bouchez’s control than a genuine structural overhaul. The liberal president tightens his inner circle, reinforces communication discipline, and repositions the key elements of his political apparatus.

Valentine Delwart: A Side-Lining Under Pressure

The departure of Valentine Delwart from her position as secretary-general is one of the clearest signals in this reorganization.

Officially, it is a personal career shift.
Unofficially, the decision bears the marks of months of mounting media and internal pressure.

Close to Charles Michel and less aligned with Bouchez’s “popular right” line, Delwart had become a symbol of the former MR. Reassigning her to a role of political secretary is an elegant way to remove her from the party’s core decision-making without pushing her out entirely.

She remains useful within the liberal ecosystem especially in light of a potential position in the Brussels Region but her internal influence is now noticeably reduced.

Yassine Rafik, From the Shadows to the Spotlight: The New Spin Doctor

The most significant promotion is that of Yassine Rafik, now officially strategic adviser to the president.

At 28, the man who played a key role in drafting the 2024 regional electoral lists becomes the architect of the MR’s political communication.

Mastering media dynamics, shaping the party’s image, crafting messages, calibrating public appearances he steps into a fully fledged spin-doctor role, American-style.

His influence will not be merely technical. Rafik is one of the very few who fully understands and embodies Bouchez’s political strategy:
• offensive,
• polarizing,
• personalized,
• inspired by Sarkozy-style communication codes,
• centered on direct engagement with public opinion.

His Brussels networks are an added asset for a party that has struggled for years to gain a solid foothold in the capital.

A Reorganization That Masks a Deeper Problem

Behind these carefully orchestrated movements lies a persistent reality: the MR has yet to prove it has elected officials capable of building a stable majority.

The post-election negotiations in the Brussels Region and in Wallonia highlighted:
• a lack of unifying profiles,
• ongoing internal divisions,
• difficulty attracting coalition partners,
• and a national strategy too polarizing to appeal to other parties.

The MR communicates loudly very loudly but has not translated its communication strength into governmental power.

This internal reshuffle therefore resembles a stylistic exercise: strengthening the presidential stronghold, but a stronghold that remains isolated in the middle of the board.

The Pieces Move, but the Outcome Remains the Same

By replacing a knight with a bishop, advancing his loyal pawns, and sidelining less aligned profiles, Georges-Louis Bouchez consolidates his grip… without truly changing the party’s overall trajectory.

The MR remains a party strong in communication, yet weak in negotiations.
A party structured around its president, yet unable to present elected officials capable of convincingly governing.

The chessboard has been rearranged.
The strategy remains the same.
And the outcome of the game for now as well.
