Infancy (0–1): Trust vs. Mistrust

The first developmental task centers on trust. Infants must determine whether the world is safe and reliable. Loving, consistent caregiving creates a sense of trust, while neglect or inconsistent care leads to mistrust and insecurity.
Example: A baby whose cries are met with warmth and food develops a belief that the world is safe. A neglected infant instead perceives the world as hostile and unpredictable.

Early Childhood (1–3): Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

In this period, children seek independence and self-control. Experiences such as toilet training and learning to eat independently define this stage. Autonomy emerges when caregivers encourage independence; excessive restriction produces shame and self-doubt.
Example: A child encouraged to dress or feed themselves develops autonomy. When constantly criticized or restricted, the child internalizes shame.

Play Age (3–6): Initiative vs. Guilt

During early childhood, imagination and exploration dominate. Children create games, experiment with leadership roles, and test boundaries. Support for their curiosity nurtures initiative; suppression or punishment fosters guilt.
Example: A child leading a pretend classroom game demonstrates initiative. Being told repeatedly to “stop” discourages creativity and generates guilt.

School Age (6–12): Industry vs. Inferiority

At school, children strive for competence and productivity. Success strengthens self-esteem and the belief in one’s abilities, while repeated failure creates inferiority and low self-worth.
Example: A student praised for solving a math problem feels capable and motivated. A child who consistently fails tests without support may feel inferior to peers.

Adolescence (12–18): Identity vs. Role Confusion

Adolescence is a critical period for identity formation. Teenagers explore roles, values, and career paths while answering the question: “Who am I?” A strong sense of self emerges from successful resolution, while conflicting roles and uncertainty lead to identity confusion.
Example: A teenager discovering artistic ability and pursuing fine arts gains a stable identity. Another who constantly shifts groups without direction may experience role confusion.

Young Adulthood (20–40): Intimacy vs. Isolation

This stage emphasizes emotional closeness and secure relationships. Building trust-based partnerships and friendships strengthens intimacy, while fear of commitment results in isolation.
Example: Lifelong friendships and marriage established in this stage reflect intimacy. A person avoiding close bonds may suffer from loneliness and isolation.

Middle Adulthood (40–65): Generativity vs. Stagnation

Middle adulthood focuses on productivity, mentoring, and contribution to society. Generativity includes raising children, guiding the next generation, and meaningful professional achievements. Failure to engage in these roles can result in stagnation and a sense of emptiness.
Example: A teacher celebrating student success illustrates generativity. A midlife adult disconnected from society may experience stagnation.

Late Adulthood (65+): Integrity vs. Despair

The final stage involves reflection on life. A sense of integrity emerges when older adults look back with satisfaction and acceptance. Despair arises when individuals feel regret or view their lives as wasted.
Example: An elder proud of lifelong service experiences peace. Another who regrets lost opportunities may face despair.

Significance of Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Theory

Erikson’s theory remains one of the most comprehensive lifespan models in developmental psychology. It emphasizes that healthy personality growth requires meeting developmental needs at each stage. This framework has influenced diverse fields:

Child-rearing practices: Helping parents understand the needs of children at different stages.
Education: Supporting teachers in fostering autonomy, initiative, and achievement.
Psychotherapy: Providing therapists with insight into unresolved conflicts across the lifespan.
Gerontology: Understanding aging, life review, and integrity in late adulthood.
